A buddy of mine that's a huge rx7 nerd once told me that when mazda built the first gen rx7, they'd hang the heater core on a hook at the beginning of the line and then build the rest of the car around it.

That's the joke surrounding a lot of cars.
The HVAC box literally IS the first thing to get placed in the interior. Apparently on current gen Camaros, the windshield needs to be removed to get the dash out so you can get at the core.
